Gaming PC Build Guide: Every Budget

Most gaming PC guides are a list of part numbers that is wrong within six months. This one is not, because the useful part of build advice is not which card to buy — it is how to split the budget, and what happens when you get the split wrong. Those rules have held for a decade.

On specific models: we have deliberately not listed exact CPU and GPU part numbers here, because they turn over every few months and a stale list does more harm than no list. Start with your monitor, not your budget

The most expensive mistake in PC building is buying a graphics card your display cannot use. A card built for 4K paired with a 1080p 60 Hz monitor is several hundred dollars doing nothing — the extra frames are generated and thrown away.

So the first question is what you are actually playing on:

Those are Canadian dollars for a complete system, excluding the monitor itself. If your budget does not reach the tier your monitor wants, buy for the tier you can afford — a well-balanced $1,200 build beats an unbalanced $1,600 one.

How to split the budget

For a gaming-first build, this allocation has held up across generations:

  • GPU — 35–45%. The single biggest determinant of frame rate. This is where the money goes.
  • CPU — 15–20%. Above a solid 6-core, more cores buy you very little in games. They buy a lot in video editing and streaming.
  • RAM — 8–10%. 16 GB is the floor, 32 GB is comfortable. Always buy as a matched pair, never a single stick.
  • Storage — 8–10%. One NVMe SSD. Nothing about a mechanical drive belongs in a gaming build except bulk archive storage.
  • Motherboard — 8–12%. Buy for the ports and connectivity you need, not the marketing tier.
  • PSU — 8–10%. Do not cut here. See below.
  • Case and cooling — 8–12%. Airflow matters more than appearance, and the two are not correlated.

The four mistakes we see most often

1. Cheaping out on the power supply

It is the one component that can damage others when it fails. A no-name unit at its limit under load is a genuine risk to the parts around it, and PSU failure is one of the more common causes of a dead build we get handed. Buy a reputable brand with real headroom — Corsair, Seasonic and be quiet! are the safe defaults — and treat the extra $40 as insurance on the other $1,500.

2. A single stick of RAM

One 16 GB stick is meaningfully slower than two 8 GB sticks, because dual-channel memory roughly doubles bandwidth to the CPU. In games with integrated graphics or heavy streaming it is a large difference. It costs the same. Buy the pair.

3. Pairing a top GPU with a weak CPU

At 1080p and high refresh rates the processor, not the graphics card, is usually the limit. Putting a flagship GPU behind a budget CPU means paying for frames the rest of the system cannot deliver — the classic bottleneck, and it always shows up in exactly the fast-paced games people bought the card for.

4. Ignoring case airflow

A sealed glass case with two fans will thermally throttle a powerful build, and throttling looks exactly like "my expensive PC stutters sometimes". Mesh fronts are unglamorous and they work. If you want the glass, budget for more fans and plan the intake and exhaust properly rather than hoping.

Do not overlook compatibility

  • CPU socket must match the motherboard — check the exact chipset, not just the brand.
  • Some boards need a BIOS update before they will POST with a newer CPU.
  • Check GPU length and CPU cooler height against the case's stated clearances.
  • Confirm the motherboard supports your RAM's rated speed, or you paid for speed you will never see.

Buying in the Waterloo Region

Canada Computers and Memory Express both have local stores, which is genuinely useful when a part is dead on arrival — an in-person exchange takes an afternoon rather than a fortnight of return shipping. It is worth paying a small premium locally on the components most likely to need swapping.

Should you build it yourself?

If you enjoy the process, yes — it is not difficult, and the parts are more forgiving than the internet suggests. The genuine value in having it built is not the assembly, it is the specification: choosing parts that balance, checking compatibility before you order, and stress-testing before it becomes your problem.
