People upgrade to a faster plan expecting the dead zone in the back bedroom to disappear, and it never does. The bottleneck is almost never the line coming into the building — it is what happens after it. More speed into a router that cannot reach the far end of the house just means the same dead zone, more expensively.
What actually causes it: router placement, construction materials, and channel congestion. Concrete, brick, foil-backed insulation, mirrors and old plaster with metal lath all attenuate 5 GHz badly. In an apartment building you may be sharing a channel with fifteen neighbours. A router in a basement utility cupboard is doing its best from the worst possible position in the building.
Why we survey before quoting
We measure signal strength and interference across the actual space and identify where it degrades. Sometimes the fix is a mesh system. Sometimes it is a single access point in the right place, or a wired backhaul run. And sometimes it is moving the router two metres and changing a channel, which costs you the price of the audit and nothing else.
Selling three mesh nodes to a house that needed one repositioned router is the easy version of this job. Measuring first is the reason we can tell you which one you are.
Segmentation, for homes as well as offices
Smart TVs, cameras, thermostats and printers are the least maintained devices on any network, and many stop receiving security updates within a few years. Putting them on a separate network from the machines holding your files means a compromised device is a nuisance instead of a route to everything else.
In an office this is not optional. Guest Wi-Fi should not be able to see the file server, and the payment terminal should not share a network with the break-room tablet. Both are configuration rather than hardware, so the cost is the setup, not the kit.

Every install is handed over with a written network map, an IP plan, and every credential. We have been called out too many times to businesses locked out of their own equipment because the person who set it up left and took the admin password with them.
